Why 2 Chainz, YG and Offset are just trying to make their momma’s PROUD

So the video for 2 Chainz’ single “PROUD” featuring YG and Offset, from his latest EP “The Play Don’t Care Who Makes It”, is hilarious, no question! The rappers’ mothers dressed up as their sons, lip-syncing their verses is probably the best thing I’ve seen in a long time. But besides being funny as hell, the 2 Chainz-directed video has a really strong message and underlying significance that most probably don’t really acknowledge. Each of the three artists has been going through their own struggles with money, drugs, the law…but they all have one thing in common – a Supermom, acting as mother and father figure at the same damn time.

2 Chainz, born Tauheed Epps, was arrested for the first time for posession of cocaine when he was only 15 years old. Since his father was in and out of prison, he was raised by his mother who went through the struggle of drug dealing and money issues with him. As he raps in the song “Me and momma used to trap out the same house, used to eat and go to sleep on the same couch, me and momma got busted at the same time, went to court and told judge the damn same lies”. 2 Chainz’ relationship with his father grew closer over the years but he passed away in 2012.

YG, born Keenon Daequan Ray Jackson, equally gave his mother a hard time. While his father was in jail, his mother took over and tried to support him in any way she could. However, this didn’t prevent him from getting arrested as well. Luckily, his sentence for residential burglery got shortened from 2 years to only 3 months, which allowed him to keep focusing on his music and finally getting signed to Def Jam Records. YG first openly showed his appreciation for his mother on his song “Sorry Momma” from his first album “My Krazy Life” where he apologizes for the hard times he has put her through. In his verse on “PROUD” he raps “‘Cause I know you wanna see me come home proper, soon as I get right I said I gotcha then I gotcha”.

Offset, born Kiari Kendrell Cephus was raised by his aunt (Quavo’s mom) and his mother, together with his cousins Quavious Keyate Marshall aka Quavo and Kirshnik Khari Ball aka Takeoff. Yeah I know right? Pretty complex names. Also pretty complex family situation! Took me a while to figure it out to be honest. But returning to the point I’m trying to make here. Offset’s and Takeoffs father’s left when they were still young and Quavo’s father passed away when he was only four years old. So clearly another Supermom situation! Also Offset isn’t just trying to make his momma proud he is also trying to make his grandmomma proud!! She suffered a premature death due to cancer and so Offset went and raised $500,000 for the American Cancer Society. Yeah I’m sure she’s hella PROUD!

But now, knowing these little background stories, watch the video! And if you’ve seen it already, watch it again! I think you’ll appreciate it even more now.

Beautiful L.A. singer Amindi K. Fro$t, Tessellated who was born in Kingston, Jamaica and producer Valleyz created this super chill track that will definitely put you in the mood for warmer days. My personal suggestion is to sip on a Pineapple Ginger Smoothie while listening to this 😉

Tomi Agape - Breeze

Breeze – Tomi Agape

Yes this track by Nigerian UK-based singer Tomi Agape is only 1:45 long and it doesn’t have very complex lyrics but it comes with such a vibe that it can’t be missing from your playlist! Also I would like to take a moment to appreciate the fact that the second verse of this song sounds like it’s taken straight out of a beautiful love poem:

“The feeling that I get whenever that you look my way (oh nana oh nana), and when our skin collides, the Earth, the moon, the stars can all feel that it’s right”

Mahalia - Hold on

Hold On – Mahalia, Buddy

UK singer Mahalia reuniting with a guy from her past, talking some real talk – I love me a track with a nice little story and message! Side Note: Buddy who is taking the perspective of the guy from the past on this song just recently released his single “Black” with A$AP Ferg.

Up to You - Show Dem Camp

Up To You (Ikon Mix) – Show Dem Camp, Funbi

This track by Nigerian rap duo Show Dem Camp and the singer Funbi (all members of the Collectiv3 click here for their website) is such a vibe you will have it on repeat. I could try to describe it but I’m just gonna link the music video here thank me later!

Leap of Faith - Juls

My Wave – Juls, Sona, Odunsi (The Engine)

This gem is my personal favourite off of Ghanaian producer Juls’ 2017 album “Leap of Faith”. Imagine taking a walk by the beach the sun is slowly starting to set, waves crashing at your feet, you feel a warm Summer breeze on your skin… Listen to it and you will know exactly what I’m talking about.

Sweetest Life - KWAYE

Sweetest Life – KWAYE

Zimbabwe-born singer KWAYE is definitely an artist to watch! He has only released his debut EP “Solar” in 2017 but I’m sure there’s a lot more where that came from. With his amazing outfits and unique dancing style in his music videos you could definitely call him the male answer to FKA Twigs. Now do me a favour and re-enact the music video to this song. Yup that’s what I call Spring vibes!

Wale - It's Complicated EP

Effortless – Wale

Who else is excited that Wale is back with that new new this month? Even though my favourite line from this 4-track EP is actually from a song called “Black Bonnie” feat. Jacquees where Wale goes “Let’s spray paint the Trump Towers, letters, U and I”. The song “Effortless”, however, is an essential on this list because it has birds chirping in the background! Whuut? And besides that it is the perfect soundtrack for you Spring love story. I quote: “I want it as is, such a natural beauty, are you even real? Are you doing this to me? You’re my favorite thrill, and there is no rush, but I think the universe is speaking to us”. You’re welcome!

Listen to these songs and more sunny vibes on my “Pon di Island” playlist right here.

5 Reasons why H.E.R. is the future of RnB

  1. SHE IS A REVOLUTIONARY! Gabi Wilson releases her music under the acronym H.E.R. which stands for “Having Everything Revealed”. Contrary to her name, she’s always wearing sunglasses, not revealing her face because she wants people to focus on her music, not her looks. I think I don’t have to mention how revolutionary this is in today’s Instagram society!!
  2. SHE EMPOWERS WOMEN! She is that much needed, super real, female RnB artist that empowers women by being an example for embracing vulnerability and real emotions. Perfect < Real
  3. SHE IS MAD TALENTED! She performed “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys on America’s Got Talent when she was only 10 years old, playing the piano and singing as if she hadn’t done anything else since the day she was born. Watch the video and tell me she wasn’t put on this planet to do this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnOjwFWkFFA
  4. SHE IS A BORN POET! She started writing poetry when she was 5 years old, so basically as soon as she knew how to write and you can tell how gifted she is by the way she takes real, honest emotions and transforms them into beautiful poetic song lyrics.
  5. RIHANNA LOVES HER! I mean come on that basically says it all. When RiRi posted a a video of herself on Instagram with “Focus” playing in the background everyone was dying to know who the artist behind this magical song was. She also got major celebrity support from artists like Usher, Alicia Keys, Tyrese, Pusha T, Wyclef Jean and of course Bryson Tiller who she supported on his “Set It Off” Tour.

I know I said “5 Reasons” but I gotta add that her live performances are magical! I am very grateful that I’ve been at her very first concert in Germany and I am telling you this girl has a stage presence like no other. She switches so effortlessly between playing the guitar, the keyboard and the electric guitar while filling the room with her love radiating soulful voice. No shiny outfit, flashing lights or backup dancers needed.
