High on a low tide with Leven Kali

If there’s one thing you should do this weekend, it is to listen to this new 11 song project called “Leven Kali: Low Tide”! Having already dropped singles like “Do U Wrong” with angel voice Syd and the two related love songs “Nunwrong” and “Sumwrong“, I was wondering how much more greatness this album could even reveal.

But the creative Leven Kali does certainly not disappoint. After starting off with an appropriate warm “Welcome” intro, consisting of his oddly familiar signature sound, Leven jumps right into “Mine” singing, “It’s been three whole weeks, since I saw your face, and girl I need you here, when I call your name”. What I love about Leven is that he manages to write the most beautiful laid back love songs without sounding corny at all. He just seems to speak his mind and heart with realness and honesty and makes showing emotions look cool.

I also love the fact that he likes to make references between his songs. Just as “Sumwrong” is the sequel to “Nunwrong”, “Mine” can be seen as the sequel to his previous track “Yours“, which he also references in the third verse of “Mine” when he sings “I know everybody wanna have the world babe, but I just wanna hear you say I’m yours”.

Next off is “Cassandra“, which has a nice little groove to it and makes the most classy use of autotune that I’ve heard since T-Pain. The following intro “ardnassaC“, yes you’ve guessed it, Cassandra backwards, functions as a musical extension to the song and shows Leven’s attention to detail and love for sound. The intro “My Pen” probably includes one of my favourite lyrics “I’m a victim of my past life”…aren’t we all? “My Offer” is definitely a highlight of this project, with its acoustic emphasis on all types of jazz instruments for the first 2:50 minutes of the song, followed by a call to tell someone you love them.

On “Mad At U“, Leven is giving us a completely new perspective on fighting in a relationship, by singing “I’d rather be mad at you than be faking and be hanging with someone new, it’s really not the same I hope you feel the same”. By describing the relationship as a movie and the fights as the parts that he doesn’t like and wishes he could rewind, he is expressing his love through the good and the hard times and it’s beautiful.

And then finally, before finishing off with “Sumwrong“, Leven Kali is serving us a romantic slow jam with “1 On 1” that manages to introduce the Leven Kali sound into the familiar R&B soundscape and that electric guitar solo starting around 3:28 is truly giving me life.

So all in all, an amazing breath of fresh air Leven Kali project that will be playing on repeat throughout the years. Find the music video to “Do U Wrong” below to catch a vibe.

Snoh with the warm feels

Today I got a little beautiful gem for you. Snoh Aalegra just released her new single “I Want You Around” that features one of my favourite artists Leven Kali on the background vocals by the way (read my blog post about him here). And I don’t just want you to listen to the song, I want you to watch the video while listening to it for the first time. I feel like a lot of music videos nowadays fail to fulfil their purpose which is to enhance the song and emphasise its deeper meaning. For me, a great music video is like art. It’s more than just about telling a story, it’s colours, lights, setting, interaction between characters, camera angles, filters and little details that underline metaphors and references.

Now, if you’re thinking that you’ve never heard of Snoh Aalegra before, I can almost definitely tell you that you have because I’m pretty sure you’ve heard Drake’s single “Do Not Disturb” from his More Life album where he sampled Snoh Aalegra’s single “Time“. The original is a very beautiful and deeply emotional song about her father passing away that Drake took out of context in kind of a rude way to be honest. But anyways…Snoh Aalegra is a very special artist, she has this timeless grace and beauty almost like she’s time travelled to the future from another time. I had the chance to see her perform live at a small club, last time I was in Los Angeles and she definitely wowed me.

Enjoy this short little romantic movie. Also, shout out to Snoh for reminding us of the greatness of Stevie Wonder’s “Innervisions” album.

Leven Kali – Artist to Watch

So this 23 year old singer, songwriter and producer has been out for a couple of years now but he got his first shine with a feature on a track called “Flex” on Playboy Carti’s mixtape in 2017. Also the song “Time” by Snoh Aalegra which became popular after it was sampled on Drake’s More Life track “Do Not Disturb”, was actually written by Snoh Aalegra and Leven Kali together.

With his parents both being musicians, Kali was basically born to do this. Originally from the Netherlands, he’s been living in Santa Monica, California for most of his life and he definitely corporates that Cali vibe into his music. But what makes him special is that he’s not just simply providing us with feel good music. His 2016 track “Joy” is a genius mix of highly relevant political lyrics and optimistic sound.

“Around the world man, Need some peace on earth man, asking for a change, oh I’m praying for some (JOY), man they blowing up France and they killing kids in class, so we need a little (JOY), now you might feel it take too long, but we gon’ fight and keep on marching to our dream”, is the third verse of the song which ends with a quote of Martin Luther King’s most famous speech “So even though, we face the difficulties, of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream!”

Leven Kali’s latest gem is the single “Do U Wrong” featuring Syd’s angelic voice and he’s going to release new music soon. So stay tuned!
